FIRE!
So here’s a thing. How safe is your clothes dryer? I thought ours was pretty safe. We clean the lint all the time. It was in good condition, even though it was getting a little old. Here’s what no one knows. In order to really de-lint your dryer, you have to take the damn thing apart. You have to remove the bottom panel and vacuum the thing out. Needless to say, like most people, we had no idea, and that’s why early Saturday afternoon, our house could easily have burned to the ground. Micro fine lint, much much finer than what you get from the lint trap and the vent, had collected inside the dryer itself. Over time that lint built up to the point where it was ignited by the burner. There was an immediate flash fire. Huge amounts of smoke were vented under the house. According to the fire department, 9 out of 10 times the floor and wall would have caught and our house would have gone up very quickly. We get very lucky. We just have some minor heat and smoke damage, and we need a new dryer. Do yourself a favor and go take your dryer apart. You might be surprised by what’s in there.
